رسالة ماجستير سارة اسماعيل / بعنوان: Synthesis of New Cross-Linked Polymers Impregnated with Substituted Carboxylic Acids and Study their Adsorption of Some Organic Pigment

Abstract

The work includes three parts:

Part One:

This part includes the preparation of the planned polymers (P1-P10) by using the solution polymerization technique and the free radical polymerization method. The process started by dissolving the substituted carboxylic acids (A1-A10) where (1 g) was taken in acrylic acid with continuous stirring and occasional heating. Then benzene was added to the mixture. After that, methylene di acrylamide (MBA) was introduced, followed by adding nitrogen gas to the mixture. At the same time, the gases were expelled using a gas expulsion machine (Schlenk). Then the solution was heated in a water bath at 70°C for half an hour, after which the initiator (AIBN) (Azobisisobutyronitrile) was added with continuous stirring. The resulting polymers (P1-P10) formed as a solid precipitate and were completely isolated by adding absolute ethanol in three batches. This step included washing the polymers and removing the non-reactive materials.

Part Two:

This part includes the characterization of the prepared polymers using FT-IR, TGA and SEM techniques.

Part Three:

This part includes the studied applications such as the test using a strong acidic medium of 10% HC1 acid and a strong basic medium of 10% KOH and some of the most commonly used organic solvents such as dimethyl formamide (DMF), tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), acetone, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, methanol and ethanol.

The swelling and shrinkage capacity of the prepared polymers was studied using two solvents, methanol and water, at different times and over 120 hours, and the percentage of swelling was measured over 24 hours. The results obtained were excellent for the polymers, as they have an effective ability to swell and shrink.

The ability of the prepared polymers to adsorb some organic dyes was studied, namely Methyl Blue Dye, Methyl Orange Dye, and Phenol Red Dye, at specific time periods (15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes). The results obtained were good with the dyes.  The study of swelling in both water abd methanol showed that the P5 exhibited higher swelling percentage after 24h with 586% and P3 exhibited higher swelling percentage after 24h with 676% respectively.

The results of pigment adsorption P10 showed higher adsorption where 100 ppm solution of methyl blue (0.13ppm) remained for phenol red P2 the remain (0.18ppm) and for methyl orang P6 the remain (0.22ppm).
